I’ve used both over the years, but as I teach English composition and literature, I find the quality of the work hard to quantify. The most successful system for me is to develop descriptive rubrics that outline expectations in each of four or five areas (style, originality, grasp of concepts, etc.)per assignment. A C paper meets expectations in all areas; a B will meet all and exceed some; an A will exceed expectations in all areas. Likewise, a D will meet some and fail to meet others, while an F fails to meet expectations in any areas. Numerical values can be assigned to the areas if you want or need to. The hardest part is devising the rubric so that expectations are clear; after that’s done, grading is relatively simple.
